The D.M. Haynes Award for Broadening Participation in Computer Science Graduate Education subsidizes expenses for current and former undergraduate participants of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE); Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE); and American Indian Science and Engineering Technology (AISES) for application and test fees for M.S. and Ph.D. programs in computer science fields.
Mohammad Al Faruque, UCI associate professor of electrical engineering and computer science, and his team revealed that the spoofing mechanism can generate a 32 percent change in output voltage … “Without touching the solar inverter, without even getting close to it, I can just place a coffee cup nearby and then leave and go anywhere in the world, from which I can destabilize the grid,” Al Faruque said. “In an extreme case, I can even create a blackout.” Read More
Dear Friends,
These are transformative times for our School, bringing tremendous opportunities mixed with unprecedented budget challenges. The progressively deteriorating State support for the UC system, translating into draconian cuts for the Samueli School, is a clear sign that we need to quickly change the way we do things to become more self-sufficient.
Using compressive steel plates, engineers at the University of California Irvine (UCI) found that it can take an applied force of about 150 newtons – a load at least 39,000 times its body weight – before its exoskeleton begins to fracture. … “The ironclad is a terrestrial beetle, so it’s not lightweight and fast but built more like a little tank,” says UCI’s David Kisailus.
Message from the Department Chair
Winter 2012
Since taking on the position of department chair in July 2010, I’ve had the chance to get reacquainted with many of our alumni. Rarely do I attend a local professional meeting, or visit a local agency or consultancy, and not come across one of our successful graduates. Like a proud parent, it warms my heart to see our graduates in a professional setting, having matured and taken on responsibilities in leadership roles, and by serving the best interests of their employers and profession.
Thank you for your interest in the Center for Opportunities & Diversity in Engineering at UCI, or CODE, as we prefer to call it.
