Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering

Water research is concentrated in the areas of hydrology and environmental engineering and builds on fundamental engineering sciences. Activities are highly interdisciplinary with strong links to earth sciences, biological sciences, information sciences, and social sciences. Areas of strength include: environmental modeling, remote sensing, environmental transport, water/energy nexus, biotechnology, environmental hazards, and climate change. Projects involve terrestrial, atmospheric, and marine ecosystems, civil infrastructure (e.g., for water supply, water treatment, energy extraction) and the interaction between natural and built systems. A unifying theme of the water group is the unique water, energy and environmental challenges facing urbanized coastlines such as southern California.
