What materials do I need to submit by the deadline?

    • TOEFL (U.S. citizens are not required to take the TOEFL exam) TOEFL scores must be submitted electronically from ETS and sent to the UCI Graduate Division (institution code 4859. NO department code needed).
  • As an alternative to the TOEFL, you may submit scores from the Academic Modules of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

Official transcripts will be requested if and when you are admitted and decide to attend UCI. Do not send official transcripts until this time, unless you are requested to do so.
  • Three (3) Letters of Recommendation (LORs) — must be done online. The application will now accept Interfolio.

I would like to make a change to my online application, but I have already submitted it. What should I do?

After submission, your application cannot be changed by you, department staff or the Graduate Division staff.

What is the difference between the "Statement of Purpose" and "Personal History?"

The "Statement of Purpose" should focus on your academic/research background and interests. The "Personal History" essay should focus on your personal background and any challenges or obstacles you may have encountered in your academic journey and how you overcame them.

I sent my recommender an electronic invitation to submit a letter of recommendation, but they did not receive it. What should I do?

It is possible that your recommender has restrictive filtering of their e-mail. They will have to allow the Webmaster e-mail address or look in their junk/spam email folder to see if the e-mail is there. If you are having any issues with the recommenders receiving their recommendation request, please email gradapplicant@uci.edu for assistance.

I was not notified that I was missing required documents (ex: transcripts, test scores, letters of recommendation). What should I do?

As a reminder, the department does not notify applicants of missing documents. It is the responsibility of the applicant to review the checklist on their application status page to confirm all documents are received
