Fabric mimics squid’s skin to achieve perfect temperature
“Ultra-lightweight space blankets have been around for decades. You see marathon runners wrapping themselves in them to prevent the loss of body heat after a race -- but the key drawback is that the material is static,” said Alon Gorodetsky of the University of California, Irvine (UCI). … Dr. Gorodetsky’s laboratory specializes in drawing inspiration from the animal kingdom. In this case they were influenced by the abilities of a certain species of squid, octopus and cuttlefish to camouflage themselves.

For sufferers of a disease that has confounded researchers, a glimmer of hope
A blood test that can diagnose chronic fatigue syndrome and that could potentially help identify treatments for the baffling illness has been discovered by Stanford University School of Medicine and U.C. Irvine researchers. … The researchers -- senior author Ronald W. Davis, … lead author Rahim Esfandyarpour, a University of California-Irvine assistant professor of electrical engineering and computer science, and their colleagues -- published their breakthrough in a paper online in the "Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences" in late April.

Foothill wins Vital Link electric race car competition at UC Irvine
High school students saw their ideas hit the pavement Saturday morning at UC Irvine. The annual Vital Link Energy Invitational took place at a parking lot on campus, with 11 high school teams racing their self-built electric cars in four heats. Two different teams from Foothill High placed first and third in the contest, which judged cars based on their efficiency using the following formula: 10 million, divided by (watt hours times total seconds).

Fuel Cells Will Help Bring Balance to the Changing Grid, Researchers Say
Fuel cells, which generate electricity by combining hydrogen and oxygen, could change that equation, says a University of California researcher, eliminating the need for large coal and nuclear power plants and leading to a zero-emissions electric grid. Jack Brouwer, a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering and director of the National Fuel Cell Research Center at University of California-Irvine, made the claim…

Forget single genes: CRISPR now cuts and splices whole chromosomes
These issues can be a deal-breaker when biologists want to make hundreds or thousands of changes to an organism's genome, says Chang Liu, a synthetic biologist at the University of California, Irvine. … “Now, I can make a series of changes in one segment and then another and combine them together. That's a big deal,” Liu says. The new tools will bolster industrial biotechnology by making it easier to vary the levels of proteins that microbes make, Liu and others say.

Founder of UCI Beckman Laser Institute Dies
UCI said biomedical laser researcher and professor Michael Berns, who founded the university’s Beckman Laser Institute & Medical Clinic, died on Aug. 13. He was 79. … Berns was known for his innovative work using “laser scissors and tweezers” to manipulate cells, university officials said. He was the first person to perform subcellular surgery on chromosomes and helped pioneer laser nanosurgery, according to SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics.
