Nowadays, college students do much more than study and go to class. They build communities and strengthen the next generation. …UC Irvine senior and mechanical engineering major, Caden Ziegler, chose the university because of his opportunity to be involved in the shaping of the school. Students nowadays are finding more and more ways to not only shape the campus environment, but the community around them. "When there’s large movements, there is activism on campus, people are vocal," shared Ziegler. He goes above and beyond the call of the typical student.

The biomedical engineering department’s growth in the Samueli School has been rapid. The department merges UCI’s strengths in medicine, biological sciences and engineering. BME faculty are competitive in garnering extramural grants, with expenditures topping $30M on an annual basis. Strong ties with many of Orange County’s more than 300 biomedical device and biotech companies provide students and faculty with distinct opportunities to solve contemporary medical challenges.
“Our thinking is that we’ve reached a point where we can do much better,” said Brett Sanders, a professor of civil and environmental engineering at UC Irvine, who studies flood risks. … Sanders led a multi-institutional study that used the approach to investigate Los Angeles and found that flood risks were vastly underestimated. “Our study showed that the number of people exposed to the 100-year flood was more than 10 times what the (Federal Emergency Management Agency) maps would suggest,” Sanders said.
