Researchers at the University of California and other international institutions have concluded that nearly all of the increase in scorched terrain can be blamed on human-caused climate change. ... “The 10 largest fires in California history have all occurred in the past two decades, and five of those have happened since 2020,” said co-author Amir AghaKouchak, UCI professor of civil and environmental engineering [associate director of Center for Hydrometeorology & Remote Sensing (CHRS)].
Suman Ranjit started to work on this clinical project using what he calls his "home built" device while a postdoctoral scholar at UC Irvine's Laboratory for Fluorescence Dynamics, but completed it at Georgetown. He now has applied for federal grants that will help him "shrink" this idea into a small handheld device that could be used in operating rooms, and to further improve automation and imaging speed.
The Air Force Office of Scientific Research has awarded a UCI materials science team $4 million for a three-year project to perfect the use of microscopic life-forms in the extraction of rare earth elements and as productive components in additive manufacturing systems. The group, led by principal investigator David Kisailus, UCI professor of materials science and engineering, is looking for ways to employ microbes as miners in extreme conditions in remote environments, including the moon, Mars and asteroids.
Biomedical engineering combines engineering expertise with medical needs for the enhancement of health care. It is a branch of engineering in which knowledge and skills are developed and applied to define and solve problems in biology and medicine. Students choose the biomedical engineering field to be of service to people, for the excitement of working with living systems, and to apply advanced technology to the complex problems of medical care. Biomedical engineers may be called upon to design instruments and devices, to bring together knowledge from many sources to develop new procedures, or to carry out research to acquire knowledge needed to solve new problems.
The Academic Innovation unit at the UC Irvine Samueli School of Engineering in partnership with Franklin Academy hosts a two-week summer camp for high school students. Working in classrooms and university facilities, students learn skills across the broad spectrum of engineering and computer science including CAD, basic fabrication, electrical circuitry, microcontrollers and programming. Supervised and taught by experienced faculty/staff and graduate student mentors, the program takes participants through projects tailored for an introduction to hands-on project design and implementation.
“The Robot Ecology Lab became the Robot Ecology Lab when we realized that these robots are in essence, living out in nature and they’re part of an ecosystem, and we started thinking about them almost like living organisms because they have to harvest energy while they’re out there, just like animals have to harvest food,” said Magnus Egerstedt, UCI dean of engineering and director of the UCI Robot Ecology Lab.
The beetle study is part of an $8 million project funded by the U.S. Air Force to explore how the biology of creatures can provide solutions to military technological challenges.
The department offers the degree program of chemical engineering, accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, www.abet.org. Students can double major or structure coursework to satisfy medical school entrance requirements.
