According to satellite imagery from UC Irvine's Flood Lab, since the 1990s the beach that once stood between the tracks and the ocean has slowly eroded to the point where the water splashes next to the track today. As the beach has practically disappeared, UCI [civil & environmental] engineering professor Brett Sanders is working with local leaders to come up with a solution. "We have the greatest resource in California here, which is our coastline," said Sanders.
Scientists are unraveling the mystery of a bug with one of the coolest names in the animal kingdom: the diabolical ironclad beetle. … "The ironclad is a terrestrial beetle, so it's not lightweight and fast but built more like a little tank," lead author David Kisailus, a UCI professor of materials science and engineering, said in a news release.
Materials Science and Engineering focuses on the discovery of new materials, the tailoring of materials systems for optimum performance in a given technological application, and the design of novel materials solutions for emerging technologies.

Mario Farnbacher’s co-driver Matt McMurry spent the months since the season opener focusing on his school work, with the 22-year-old finishing his aerospace engineering degree at the University of California. “I’ve been busy at home finishing my last quarter at the University of California, Irvine,” McMurry said. … “Through college, I was mostly involved in the automotive aspects of aerospace engineering,” he added. … “Automotive engineering and race engineering have always been an interest of mine. Long term plans, I’m still focusing on racing.
"What a microgrid is, is the ability for a battery to operate, separate from a utility, a number of lots," said Scott Hansen, vice president of KB Homes Forward Planning and Land Development. "If you want to think of it like an island of power unto itself." … The idea started two years ago with a federal grant and joint partnership between University of California-Irvine, KB Homes, SoCal Edison and SunPower. "How do we provide reliability to our customers?
Welcome to the Materials and Manufacturing Technology (MMT) graduate concentration at The Henry Samueli School of Engineering. This school-wide graduate program leads to an M.S. degree or Ph.D. degree in Engineering with a concentration in MMT. It also offers a part-time study option for students pursuing an M.S. degree. Currently, there are 33 faculty members from six departments (BME, CEE, CBE, EECS, MAE and MSE) participating in this interdisciplinary program.
The Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering faculty are internationally recognized experts and scholars in diverse research areas: Biomechanical Engineering; Design and Manufacturing; Dynamics, Controls and Robotics; Energy and Environment; Fluid Mechanics and Aerodynamics; Mechanics of Solids, Structures and Materials; Microsystems and Nanomaterials; and Power and Propulsion.
