Rep. Levin, Officials Discuss Importance of Funding Rail Solutions
Brett Sanders, a professor of civil and environmental engineering at the University of California, Irvine …. said he has studied the risks along the Southern California coast in varying capacities for more than a decade, including using satellite imagery to chart the changes that Cotton’s Point in San Clemente has experienced. Nearby residents are correct when they say that what used to be a stable beach facing gradual decline took a drastic turn for the worst around 2015, according to Sanders. ...

Risk of electricity shortages rises with extreme heat waves
The question is, “can we build new resources fast enough to compensate for decommissioning of existing resources and to handle elevated peak loads on the grid due to intensifying extreme weather events?” said Brian Tarroja [associate researcher] at the University of California, Irvine. Read More

Researchers identify effects of heat in materials with atomic resolution
A team of researchers at the University of California, Irvine, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and other institutions used cutting-edge electron microscopes and novel techniques, to discover a way to map phonons—vibrations in crystal lattices—in atomic resolution, enabling deeper understanding of the way heat travels through quantum dots, engineered nanostructures in electronic components.
