A report authored by scientists from Johns Hopkins University; the University of California, Irvine; and the University of California, Riverside; was published Monday in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Findings show how life can flourish in places without much water—including Mars, which has an environment similar to the Atacama—and how people living in arid regions may someday be able to procure hydration from available minerals.
And it may not just be L.A. County that is vastly underestimating its flood risk: "Across the U.S., we witnessed one city after the other get hit by flooding and be seemingly unprepared for the amount of flooding that happens," said Brett Sanders, a professor of civil and environmental engineering at UC Irvine and the study's lead author. In addition to noting the increased risk, Sanders said it is crucial to understand who within a community is most exposed to these types of events and may face the longest road to recovery.

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved a motion calling on the Department of Public Works to prepare a report on the viability of existing flood control infrastructure, as well as plans for reducing flood risks and making disadvantaged communities more resilient.
But the flood risk in Los Angeles is much greater than what the latest storm delivered, according to a study published in October.

University of California, Irvine (UCI) scientists say a robust, low-cost imaging platform, utilizing lab-on-a-chip technology, and costing just a couple of hundred dollars, may be available for rapid coronavirus diagnostic and antibody testing throughout the United States by the end of the year. Using blood from a finger prick, the UCI test probes hundreds of antibody responses to 14 respiratory viruses, including SARS-CoV-2. Results are available in two to four hours.
