It doesn’t take much rain for road intersections to wind up underwater, says Brett Sanders, a professor of civil and environmental engineering at the University of California, Irvine. He has worked to develop another effort to educate residents: a hyperlocal forecasting system to inform them of the risk that their neighborhoods — or even streets — face from a coming storm. … “This event is a bit of a wake-up call,” he said.

The Executive Advisory Board was formed in 1999 and is comprised of senior executives representing a range from start-up to major biomedical device and diagnostics companies, venture capital, consulting firms, and professional service providers. The board meets quarterly to assist academic leadership several ways.
Curriculum Development: The Board advises UCI on its strong interest in the establishment of a biomedical engineering minor and new specializations to complement the major at the undergraduate level. Industry sponsorship of specific project assignments in new design and independent study courses has been implemented with reassurance that proprietary rights waivers by students are appropriate where warranted by the subject matter.
The Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy, or ARPA-E, grant was part of a $22 million nationwide research disbursement that included $1.8 million for macroalgae cultivation research at UC Irvine.

The research team, led by Mohammad Al Faruque, an electrical engineer, computer scientist and director of UCI's Advanced Integrated Cyber-Physical Systems Lab, discovered – almost by accident – that it is possible for an ordinary smartphone to record the very precise sounds made by a 3D printer during operation. While this may seem innocuous and even pointless, unless you’re trying to create a very avant-garde musical composition, those sounds carry very specific information about the printer’s movements.
