Among the competitors this year is the first from Orange County since the Solar Decathlon began. Team Orange, as it’s called, consists of a core group of 20 students from UC Irvine, Chapman University, Saddleback College and Irvine Valley College, all of whom have collaborated with another 100 students on the home they call Casa Del Sol, or House of the Sun.
Over the next year, the Crystal Cove Conservancy plans on collaborating with the UC Irvine Samueli School of Engineering for a kindergarten-to-college engineering program. “Over the next year, we’ll work together with our colleagues at UCI to develop curriculum goals, learning outcomes, and research partnerships, plus testing and piloting a program for at least one grade level,” [Kate] Wheeler said.
Researchers at the University of California, Irvine, found that solar inverters — which link solar panels to the wider grid — can be shut down or manipulated to potentially disrupt the flow of electricity. They first presented their new study at the virtual USENIX Security 2020 conference earlier this month. Mohammad Al Faruque, a UC Irvine associate professor of electrical engineering and computer science who led the research, said inverters can be hijacked with equipment worth less than $50.

Chang Liu was hired as an assistant professor in BME in January by the Center for Complex Biological Systems. Professor Liu received his bachelor’s degree in chemistry with highest honors, summa cum laude at Harvard University, and his doctorate in chemistry at the Scripps Research Institute. He was most recently a Miller Fellow at the Miller Institute for Basic Research in Science at UC Berkeley.
