UC Irvine researchers study beetle that can survive being run over by a car
The experiment it was involved in was part of a years-long study by UCI professor and principle investigator David Kisailus, who has been seeking to identify what makes the beetle so strong. “This diabolical ironclad beetle is not able to fly away, so it’s adapted to living on the ground,” Kisailus said. … After determining the cause of the beetle’s strength, Kisailus’ lab is working on applying the biological structure of the beetle to things humans engineer.

UC Irvine engineers create high-tech fabric that lets wearers pay for purchases with a high-five
“If you’ve held your smartphone or charge card close to a reader to pay for a purchase, you have taken advantage of near-field signaling technologies. Our fabrics work on the same principle, but we’ve extended the range significantly,” said Peter Tseng, UCI assistant professor of electrical engineering and computer science.

UC Irvine looks to revitalize ocean research center in Newport Beach
UCI associate professor Kristen Davis said Kerckhoff’s close access to the ocean will help researchers get data quickly during events like last year’s unseasonably warm ocean waters .... Davis said the OCEANS Initiative could also tackle difficult coastal issues, like sea level rise, that will need a comprehensive look from several scientific disciplines before real answers emerge.

U.S. electrical grids are not prepared for climate change
How prepared are American power grids for climate change? As the weather gets more extreme, “in general I would say grids are not prepared for climate change,” said Brian Tarroja, a researcher in civil and environmental engineering at University of California, Irvine. … “When you have microgrids and energy storage and distrbuted solar and things like that, you have more levers you can pull to make sure that the electric load is met,” he said. UC Irvine Engineers Secure Air Force Grant To Investigate Exoskeletons Of Special Beetles
A team led by researchers at UC Irvine has won a $904,000 grant from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research for a four-year project to uncover the multiscale architectural features and functions of the exoskeletons of two beetle species. The goal of the work is to reveal new designs that provide robust mechanical properties while exhibiting such other characteristics as thermal stability.

UCI Robot Ecology Lab inspired by nature
“The Robot Ecology Lab became the Robot Ecology Lab when we realized that these robots are in essence, living out in nature and they’re part of an ecosystem, and we started thinking about them almost like living organisms because they have to harvest energy while they’re out there, just like animals have to harvest food,” said Magnus Egerstedt, UCI dean of engineering and director of the UCI Robot Ecology Lab.

UC faces tumultuous finals week as strike reaches pivotal moment
Mark Roche, a 21-year-old biomedical engineering student at UC Irvine, said his classes depend on teaching assistants. Finals this quarter were altered from tests to group projects, which has resulted in less stress for Roche. “Honestly, I thought it was a win,” he said. But Iliana Rosas, 21, was disappointed this week when the professor for her sociology, race and ethnicity class canceled their final exam. She was looking forward to testing her knowledge. But without a teaching assistant to grade the test, the professor decided to eliminate it.

UC Irvine Research Program Takes Step Toward Affordable Energy
A project that began at UC Irvine is taking its first steps in finding real-world ways to reduce carbon emissions and deliver affordable and reliable energy to 22 million California customers. Working in a partnership with SoCalGas and the National Fuel Cell Research Center, UC Irvine helped develop the technology known as Hydrogen Blending. According to reports, it will be the first in California and among the first in the nation to seek ways of reducing carbon emissions.
