David Kisailus, UC Irvine professor, and graduate student Taifeng Wang, both in materials science and engineering, took a close look at the ultrahard teeth of the Northern Pacific Cryptochiton stelleri or gumboot chiton.
UCI netted $529 million in grants and contracts for research last year, which “surpasses our campus strategic plan goal of $500 million while accelerating UCI’s ascent among its Association of American Universities peers as a world-class research university,” UCI Chancellor Howard Gillman said in a press release.
The Samueli School of Engineering offers undergraduate degrees in a wide range of traditional and emerging fields. All engineering programs combine science, engineering fundamentals, design principles and application, and a culminating design experience. Students are encouraged to participate in research and hands-on engineering design opportunities to develop the practical skills needed for graduate study or employment. The school currently offers 12 majors and two minors.

Researchers from the University of California, Irvine, have made a breakthrough with a bio-inspired research project that they say is the first step towards intrinsically translucent tissue. The team was inspired by octopuses, squids, and other sea creatures that can disappear by using specialized tissues in the body to manipulate the transmission and reflection of light. The scientists have been able to engineer human cells that have similar transparent abilities.
The department offers a rich and diverse educational experience for students interested in majoring in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering or their combination. Students can dual major in mechanical and aerospace engineering by satisfying the degree requirements for both majors. Dual degrees with other majors, mechanical engineering and materials science for example, are also possible.
