Tom Yuen (’74 electrical engineering) was on dialysis for 42 years, and I’m sad to learn that the serial entrepreneur who cofounded AST Research passed away at age 70 on February 13. But I’m glad to know that he beat the odds on his kidney disease for far longer than doctors expected.

The UCI Department of Materials Science and Engineering in the Samueli School of Engineering is anticipating openings of postdoctoral scholar positions (Levels 0-IV). These positions require a Ph.D. in materials science or closely related field and subject-matter expertise in one or more of the following areas:
"We developed a novel technique to differentially map phonon momenta with atomic resolution, which enables us to observe nonequilibrium phonons that only exist near the interface," said co-author Xiaoqing Pan, UCI professor of materials science and engineering and physics, Henry Samueli Endowed Chair in Engineering, and IMRI director.

The researchers at the University of California, Irvine, used a brain-computer interface to bypass the damage in a man who had been paralyzed for five years. … One of the researchers, Dr. An Do, said: "We showed that you can restore intuitive, brain-controlled walking after a complete spinal cord injury.”
