Large-scale turbulence is causing new headaches for anxious aviators in a warming atmosphere, but it’s small-scale turbulence that has always made physicists scratch their heads. The cascading process that transfers energy from the biggest eddies down to the tiniest ones causes a turbulent flow at the small scale to retain no memory of the large-scale flow structure. Because of this memory loss, researchers often assume that small-scale turbulence is isotropic.

Pusan National University was founded in May 1946 with the establishment ideology of truth, liberty and devotion. Although the University started initially with just two faculties, the Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Fisheries, since then, it has grown into a major research level institution covering all the major disciplines within academia. Today, the University enjoys its reputation as one of top universities in Korea.
"Social networks aren't smooth and tidy. They're rough and irregular, so diseases like COVID-19 that are transmitted through intensive contact can spread very unevenly," said co-author Carter Butts, UCI professor of sociology. "This results in some communities getting hit much earlier and a lot harder than others, even within the same area.

The disparities between these [flood risk] models are not just academic—they have real-world consequences. As the UCI study revealed, discrepancies between model predictions can result in vastly different risk assessments for neighborhoods with different demographic profiles. This divergence is particularly concerning for marginalized communities, which are already more vulnerable to environmental hazards due to factors like historical neglect, economic disparity, and reduced access to resources.
