Engineers at the University of California, Irvine, have made a new and improved space blanket that allows users to control their temperature. The blanket, inspired by the adaptive properties of cephalopod skin, comprises a soft and stretchable polymer matrix that is transparent to infrared radiation covered with an array of infrared-deflecting metal domains anchored within the matrix.
Brisk and UC Irvine electrical and computer engineering professor Mohammad Abdullah Al Faruqueand his doctoral student Sina Faezi; along with John C. Chaput, a professor of pharmaceutical sciences at UC Irvine; and William Grover, a bioengineering professor at UC Riverside, set microphones similar to those in a smartphone in several spots near a DNA synthesizer in Chaput’s lab.
Scientists at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) say they have shown that they can give cells a short-term boost of energy through mitochondrial transplantation.
According to satellite imagery from UC Irvine's Flood Lab, since the 1990s the beach that once stood between the tracks and the ocean has slowly eroded to the point where the water splashes next to the track today. As the beach has practically disappeared, UCI [civil & environmental] engineering professor Brett Sanders is working with local leaders to come up with a solution. "We have the greatest resource in California here, which is our coastline," said Sanders.
The Mechanical Engineering program at UCI delivers an educational program of study that prepares its graduates to become intellectual leaders in industry, government, and academia.
