In LA, drought and fire are considered the biggest climate problems. But Angelenos should also worry about flooding, according to a new study from UC Irvine. Researchers found that hundreds of thousands of LA County residents could be inundated by at least a foot of flood water — should a once-in-a-100-year storm hit the area. One of the researchers is Brett Sanders, a professor of civil and environmental engineering at UC Irvine. Read More

Medhat Haroun Engineering Fellowship

The Medhat Haroun Engineering Fellowship is open to both Domestic and International Ph.D. students. Eligibility criteria includes: Emphasis in Structures, Geotechnics and Materials Engineering, a graduate level UC GPA of 3.7, and successful completion of the Preliminary Exam. A call for applications will be sent by the Graduate Coordinator to continuing Ph.D. students.

Mimicking squid skin to improve thermoregulating blankets

Engineers at the University of California, Irvine, have made a new and improved space blanket that allows users to control their temperature. The blanket, inspired by the adaptive properties of cephalopod skin, comprises a soft and stretchable polymer matrix that is transparent to infrared radiation covered with an array of infrared-deflecting metal domains anchored within the matrix.
