UCI students showing off their Hyperloop designs in weekend competition

A team of UC Irvine engineering students will go head to head this weekend with some 120 teams from around the world as it presents its sleek, frictionless version of a high-speed train that would travel from Los Angeles to San Francisco in a matter of minutes. UCI students, competing in the first-ever SpaceX Hyperloop Competition, have built a scale model of their HyperXite pod (pronounced Hyper Excite). The concept uses compressed air to levitate and glide the pod along a track.

A new study from researchers at the University of California, Irvine has reportedly found a link between disruptions to sleep cycles and the onset of Alzheimer’s.
Published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, the study analyzed the overall cognitive abilities of laboratory mice subjected to jet lag-like conditions by regularly shortening their awake time schedules.

The inaugural Team Orange County, with members from UC Irvine, Chapman University, Saddleback College and Irvine Valley College, came in ninth place. However, the team also found out Saturday that it had come in second of the 14 teams in the engineering category. “I wasn’t expecting it,” said Alex McDonald, project manager. “My parents are here, they’re both engineers, so it was a very touching moment.”

Among the competitors this year is the first from Orange County since the Solar Decathlon began. Team Orange, as it’s called, consists of a core group of 20 students from UC Irvine, Chapman University, Saddleback College and Irvine Valley College, all of whom have collaborated with another 100 students on the home they call Casa Del Sol, or House of the Sun.
