UCI Team Develops App For Coronavirus Tracing
University of California, Irvine researchers said they have developed a way to digitally track the spread of the coronavirus, providing a means to keep track of the COVID-19 pandemic and aiding the reopening the state’s economy. TrackCOVID is a free open-source smart phone app ….. “It’s completely voluntary, said lead author Tyler Yasaka, a software engineer and junior specialist in otolaryngology at the UCI School of Medicine.

UC Irvine’s engineering school gets $50 million gift
The University of California, Irvine, has received a $50 million donation to its engineering school to create three new research institutes, campus officials announced. With the gift from Susan and Henry Samueli, the engineering school will launch research institutes focused on health, environment and society. The Engineering+Society Institute will feature research into how automation can improve the human experience, while research at the Engineering+Environment Institute will explore large-scale sustainable energy solutions, among other things.

With a twitch of its muscles, the tiny, venomous greater blue-ringed octopus, native to the warm waters of the Western Pacific and Indian oceans, changes the iridescent circles on its surface according to its intentions. … A group of UC Irvine engineers was so intrigued by this survival mechanism … that they created a device that recreates it. … “I like to think of it as bio-inspiration,” says Alon Gorodetsky, an award-winning professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering and the paper’s lead author.

UC Irvine physicians and local fabric cutting business team up to produce new type of mask
Aditi Sharma, a resident physician in the UC Irvine Health dermatology department, said the sterilization wraps can be used in masks that filter up to 87% of particles, which is almost as effective as N95 masks, which have a filtration efficiency of 95%. … To design the mask, the physicians received help from several of the engineering groups on the UCI campus, including the Michelle Khine lab, Elliot Hui lab, and the Ben Dolan lab. UCI medical students have also helped cut wire for the masks.

UCI Now Developing Bioengineered TMJ Implants
Noting that synthetic materials and other approaches have proved ineffective, researchers at the University of California Irvine (UCI) are developing biological temporomandibular joint (TMJ) discs that will be suitable for implantation in human beings. “The TMJ is central to chewing, talking, and so many other daily activities. So when this crucial joint is impaired, there are significant negative effects on quality of life,” said Kyriacos A. Athanasiou, PhD, PhM, MS, distinguished professor of biomedical engineering.
