Amir AghaKouchak, an environmental engineering professor at the University of California, Irvine, told Forbes that because this land loss happens gradually, it doesn’t capture public attention the way earthquakes or floods do. “It lacks the dramatic visibility of acute disasters like earthquakes and floods, allowing authorities to underplay its risks,” says AghaKouchak.

Interop 2019: CIOs, Security, AI, and More
Phillip Sheu, IEEE Fellow and professor at University of California, Irvine, told attendees that he has been observing AI since the 1980s, and that he doesn't want today's AI initiatives to stumble the way projects did before, over promising on what AI can do. He noted that 80’s, plenty has happened to make AI more achievable: faster computers, cheap memory, the growth of the internet, cellphones, IoT connectivity, and big data.

Industry Advisory Board
The Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Corporate Industry Board was formed in 2007 and is comprised of industry representatives from a variety of electrical engineering and communications technology companies. The board meets to advise and assist academic leadership on curriculum development, student internships and design review, and to serve as a liaison to local industry.

“It’s an incredible travesty, this sort of really crude and unsophisticated approach for dealing with what is a very serious issue,” said Jack Brouwer, an engineering professor and director of the National Fuel Cell Research Center at the University of California, Irvine. “We have technological solutions for this that exist,” Mr. Brouwer said.
