The educational mission of the Biomedical Engineering Program at UC Irvine is to provide students with rigorous, multi-disciplinary training that enable graduates to be leaders and innovators in bioengineering and biomedical professions. This is accomplished by developing and offering curricula that integrate engineering sciences, life sciences, clinical medicine, research and engineering design in collaboration with local biomedical device and biotechnology companies.
The Biomedical Engineering faculty have special interest and expertise in four thrust areas: Biophotonics, Biomedical Micro/Nanoscale Systems, Bioimaging & Computation, and Molecular & Cellular Engineering. Biophotonics faculty are interested in photomedicine, laser microscopy, optical coherence tomography, medical imaging, and phototherapy.
“Flooding is probably one of the toughest hazards to get right,” said Brett Sanders, a professor of civil and environmental engineering at UC Irvine. He and his colleagues developed a detailed flood model for Los Angeles that highlighted much higher flood risk than indicated in federally defined floodplains.
Biomedical engineering combines engineering expertise with medical needs for the enhancement of health care. It is a branch of engineering in which knowledge and skills are developed and applied to define and solve problems in biology and medicine. Students choose the biomedical engineering field to be of service to people, for the excitement of working with living systems, and to apply advanced technology to the complex problems of medical care.
