About
The growth of biomedical engineering at UCI has been rapid, beginning with the formation of the Center for Biomedical Engineering in 1998. The center was funded by a generous $3-million development award from the Whitaker Foundation. In 2002, three major milestones were achieved including the formation of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, two undergraduate degree programs, and the expansion of the graduate program leading to the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in biomedical engineering.

After California’s deadly storms left towns and farmland flooded, residents are struggling to recover
“It’s going to take some time to reveal how bad this event is,” said Brett Sanders, a professor of civil and environmental engineering at the University of California, Irvine. “Consequences of natural disasters can linger for years, and often assistance comes too late for disadvantaged communities.” Sanders is among a handful of researchers at UCI studying how low-income neighborhoods are disproportionately at risk for and affected by flooding.

As medical supplies dwindle, universities build ventilators, swabs
Similar efforts to develop an easy-to-produce ventilator with open source blueprints are underway at the University of California Irvine. “The need for ventilators is a medical Dunkirk,” UCI surgeon Brian said in a press release. “It’s a once-in-a-generation call to arms that we all must respond to.” Read More

AI Engineering: The next frontier for research and technological advances
This intersection between AI and traditional engineering is rapidly becoming its own formal discipline called AI Engineering. To explore this, ZDNET had the opportunity to discuss AI Engineering with Pramod Khargonekar, distinguished professor of electrical engineering and computer science and vice chancellor for research at the University of California, Irvine.
