Extreme Flooding from Florence Likely, Due to Convergence of Threats
“We have ignored it in the past, we cannot ignore it in the future,” says Amir AghaKouchak, a civil engineer at the University of California, Irvine …. AghaKouchak is studying how sea level rise might affect such flooding; a 2017 study he co-authored found that when compound flooding and sea level rise were factored in, the chances of floods that exceed what local infrastructure was built to accommodate went up considerably.

E.coli Being Used to Detect Heavy Metals Within Water
This is an extremely important development as scientists have now found a new way to improve water quality, and not just in the United States. What is this new technology? … In other words, through the machine’s built-in optical sensors, scientists are able to monitor E.coli’s biochemical responses to exposure to different metals, such as chromium and arsenic, and discover if the samples of water are contaminated at a much earlier rate.

Engineers invent octopus-inspired technology that can deceive and signal
With a split-second muscle contraction, the greater blue-ringed octopus can change the size and color of the namesake patterns on its skin for purposes of deception, camouflage and signaling. Researchers at the University of California, Irvine have drawn inspiration from this natural wonder to develop a technological platform with similar capabilities for use in a variety of fields, including the military, medicine, robotics and sustainable energy.
