Professor Sorooshian Invited to Join the U.S. National Committee for the International Hydrological Programme

Soroosh Sorooshian, distinguished professor of civil and environmental engineering, has been invited to join the U.S. National Committee for the International Hydrological Programme (IHP), which is recognized by the U.S. National Commission for the United Nations' Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), as the civil and environmental engineering department’s committee representative.

IHP’s main goals and functions include advising UNESCO on significant and pertinent water resource topics, and providing information necessary for UNESCO to make recommendations to the government.  Identified as UNESCO’s core program for work on fresh water issues, IHP works to effectively help improve water management on both a local and global level, educate professional and scientific organizations, and  individuals on the water cycle, and promote overall awareness of global water issues.

Sorooshian’s research focuses on surface hydrology, primarily in the area of rainfall-runoff modeling, including an effort to model identification and calibration issues.  He has also developed special estimation criteria to account for the uncertainties of calibration data. Other research interests include the application of remote sensing data for characterization of hydrologic parameters and fluxes, as well as the implication of climate variability and change in water resources.
