Samueli School Graduate Program Ranks 10th in Nation for Hispanics

The September 2005 edition of Hispanic Business magazine has ranked the graduate engineering program at UC Irvine 10th in the nation for Hispanics

Oct. 11, 2005 - The September 2005 edition of Hispanic Business magazine has ranked the graduate engineering program at the University of California, Irvine 10th in the nation for Hispanics.  This year marks the first time the magazine has nationally ranked engineering graduate programs.

Hispanic Business praised UC Irvine for its continual commitment to increase the number of Hispanics in both academia and the workforce.  Programs designed to help support this effort include both a National Science Foundation-funded Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation, and educational options found at The Center for Opportunities and Diversity, which offers free tutoring, peer mentoring, financial assistance for books and research, networking, and career guidance to students.

The magazine reported the following statistics about The Henry Samueli School of Engineering:

  • Total engineering school enrollment: 677
  • Hispanic engineering school enrollment: 27
  • Percent Hispanic graduate enrollment: 4.0%
  • Total postgraduate degrees earned: 212
  • Postgraduate degrees earned by Hispanics: 2
  • Percent of postgraduate degrees earned by Hispanics: 1 %

Overall, Hispanic Business magazine ranked the following engineering graduate programs as the top 10 in the nation: University of Texas at El Paso (1), Georgia Institute of Technology (2), University of Central Florida (3), San Diego State (4), Michigan State University (5), Rice University (6), University of Texas at Austin (7), West Virginia University (8), Iowa State University (9), and University of California at Irvine (10).
