LEADING AEROSPACE ENGINEER TO JOIN SAMUELI SCHOOL

Irvine, Calif., July 8, 2002 — Satya N. Atluri, an award-winning engineer whose research has led to greater aircraft safety and durability, will join The Henry Samueli School of Engineering in early July.

Atluri will be the Henry Samueli "von Karman" Endowed Chair in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and head the Center for Aerospace Research and Education, a program he will bring with him from UCLA.

"Atluri is internationally known for his computational modeling of aerospace structures and aircraft," said Nicolaos G. Alexopoulos, dean of The Henry Samueli School of Engineering. "His work in bio-nano and micro-mechanical systems and materials will be a tremendous asset to the school's growing nanoscale/microscale engineering program."

Atluri's widely-cited research spans several disciplines and has shed light on the workings of complex biological and mechanical systems. His current projects include a mathematical model to pinpoint when helicopter rotors and other heavily used components fail in order to "damage-proof" these aircraft. In another project, he hopes to explain how inorganic and organic materials--tiny micro-machines and human proteins--could work together to improve human health. He also is working with the Federal Aviation Administration to design small, inexpensive sensors to wirelessly match airport passengers to their baggage.

"I was impressed by the faculty and administration at UCI and foresee great potential for growth here," said Atluri.

Atluri, a member of the National Academy of Engineering, the world's most elite engineering organization, received its Outstanding Achievement Award in 1995. He is also the recipient of the Excellence in Aviation Award and the President's National Medal of Technology Distinguished Service Award, among others.

The award-winning professor comes to UCI from the UCLA Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, where he was professor and director of the Center of Aerospace Research and Education.

The Henry Samueli School of Engineering encompasses five departments: biomedical engineering, civil and environmental engineering, chemical engineering and materials science, electrical and computer engineering and mechanical and aerospace engineering. The school also is home to numerous research centers, including the Center for Pervasive Communications, National Fuel Cell Research Center, Integrated Nanosystems Research Facility and Center for Biomedical Engineering. In addition, the school is the leading component of the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology, one of three California Institutes for Science and Innovation.
