Chien studies microgravity combustion and flame science, multiphase reacting flows, spray and aerosols and using optical diagnostics.

She served as the lead in the realtime international space station (ISS) remote operations on Earth for E-FIELD Flames experiment for 6 months, with 250 testpoints conducted, in 2018 with the NASA GRC team.

Her research focus includes microgravity combustion control, hydrate flames and gas storage, and atomization and spray diagnostics. The environment of these research activities stretches from standard atmosphere, to high pressure and zero-g.
