European Academy of Sciences Recognizes Sorooshian as Fellow

Soroosh Sorooshian, whose work in water resources over nearly two decades has been well recognized worldwide by many countries, is selected a foreign fellow of the European Academy of Sciences.

June 26, 2023 - The European Academy of Sciences has elected Soroosh Sorooshian, UCI Distinguished Professor of civil and environmental engineering and Earth system science, as a foreign fellow of the Earth and Environmental Sciences Division.

Sorooshian is an internationally recognized expert whose research focuses on water resources systems, climate studies and application of remote sensing to Earth science problems, with an emphasis on the hydrologic cycle and water issues in arid and semi-arid zones. As founding director of UCI’s Center for Hydrometeorology & Remote Sensing, he and his team specialize in tracking and measuring global precipitation. The center’s work over nearly two decades has been well recognized worldwide by many countries, and Sorooshian’s contributions in water research have revolutionized hydrological system analysis and helped advance the field of precipitation forecasting globally.

EURASC is a nonprofit independent organization of distinguished scholars and engineers performing leading research and developing advanced technologies. Founded in 2003, its major objective is to establish efficient collaboration among scientists, researchers, educators, engineers and leaders across the globe to develop policy for solving critical science and technology problems.

“It is a great honor to be recognized by my European colleagues,” said Sorooshian. “I am truly humbled to be selected as a foreign fellow of the European Academy of Sciences Earth and Environmental Sciences Division.”

Sorooshian is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, International Academy of Astronautics and The World Academy of Sciences. He’s received numerous awards, including the American Geophysical Union’s Robert E. Horton Medal and the American Meteorological Society’s Hydrologic Sciences Medal. He is the current chair of the Rosenberg International Forum on Water Policy, University of California, Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources and a former chair of the Scientific Steering Group of the World Climate Research Programme under the joint sponsorship of the World Meteorological Organization, the International Council for Science and the UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission.
