Schoenung Named a Materials Research Society Fellow

Julie Schoenung is named a 2023 fellow of the Materials Research Society.

April 13, 2023 - UCI Samueli School’s Julie Schoenung is one of 17 materials scientists worldwide elected a 2023 fellow of the Materials Research Society for distinguished research accomplishments and outstanding contributions to the advancement of materials research. The highly selective fellow designation is reserved for 0.2 percent of the MRS regular membership.

Schoenung, professor and chair of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and co-director of the World Institute for Sustainable Development of Materials (WISDOM), was singled out for  “pioneering contributions in trimodal composites, coatings, additive manufacturing, green engineering and mentoring of the next generation of materials scientists.”

In her research, Schoenung synthesizes, characterizes and models new materials to meet the increasing demands of ballistic, transportation and energy applications. She also studies the impacts of materials transactions on human health and environmental quality, and leads efforts to advance sustainable development of materials, especially as used in manufacturing processes.

Schoenung has served as a charter member of the MRS Focus on Sustainability subcommittee, which since 2016 has built a robust community of practice around materials and sustainability through a number of events and activities. She is serving as a co-guest editor of am upcoming themed issue of the MRS Bulletin covering the topic of sustainable development of materials, as well as co-hosting a companion webinar.

Schoenung is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and National Academy of Inventors and is a fellow of Alpha Sigma Mu, the American Ceramic Society, ASM International and the Minerals, Metals & Materials Society.
