American Epilepsy Society Recognizes Lopour

Beth Lopour, an associate professor of biomedical engineering, is named a fellow of the American Epilepsy Society.

Oct. 18, 2023 - The American Epilepsy Society has selected Beth Lopour as a fellow in recognition of her professional accomplishments and deep commitment to the field of epilepsy.

Lopour, an associate professor of biomedical engineering, studies electrical signals recorded from the brains of people with epilepsy. It is standard practice for those brain signals to be visually interpreted by neurologists to identify and characterize seizures. However, Lopour says that by using an engineering approach, she can study properties of the data that are not readily apparent by eye. For example, networks of brain regions may interact and contribute to the generation of seizures, and mathematics can be used to measure those connections. This information complements the standard clinical data and can be used by clinicians to inform decision making. Lopour collaborates with physicians at several local hospitals with an aim to improve understanding of the brain’s processes and facilitate advancements in epilepsy diagnosis and treatment.

"My career has been dedicated to improving the lives of children and adults with epilepsy, and the mentorship, collaborations and support from AES has magnified the impact of my work,” said Lopour “It is truly an honor to be selected as an AES fellow."

Lopour’s research is supported by the NIH, the Pediatric Epilepsy Research Foundation, the Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome Foundation, the John C. Hench Foundation, and the Elerding Foundation. She was previously honored by the American Epilepsy Society with a Junior Investigator Award in 2016.

Fellows will be recognized at the society’s 2023 Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida, in December.
