El-Azab Selected to Serve on American Ceramic Society President’s Council of Student Advisors

Salma El-Azab, a graduate student in materials science and engineering, has been chosen to serve on the President’s Council of Student Advisors of the American Ceramic Society.

June 27, 2022 - Samueli School of Engineering student Salma El-Azab, who has just completed the third year of her doctoral studies in materials science and engineering, has been named a delegate on the President’s Council of Student Advisors (PCSA) of the American Ceramic Society (ACerS).

The PCSA is the student-led committee responsible for representing student interests to ACerS and its subsidiary committees, divisions, sections and classes. The PCSA is the primary face of ACerS to ceramics and materials science students. In this role, El-Azab will represent UC Irvine to PCSA, as well as represent the PCSA and ACerS to UCI’s Department of Materials Science and Engineering.

El-Azab conducts research in the mechanical properties of high entropy oxides, which are a novel ceramic material, in the lab of Julie Schoenung, professor and chair of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. She is excited for this opportunity.

“I applied because I was interested in PCSA's outreach efforts and its connections to industry, and so that I can be engaged in the broader ceramics community,” said El-Azab, who is interested in joining the council’s Communications Committee, which produces student-focused content for the ACerS Bulletin. “This would be perfect for me, because I am interested in a career in scientific communication.”
