Fall Design Review Takes on the Rain

Students brave the rain at the Fall Design Review

Dec. 18, 2019 – The event started like every other year – Gateway Plaza bustling with student energy and excitement Friday afternoon, Dec. 6, as more than 700 students set up to participate in the Samueli School’s 2019 Fall Design Review. This annual event is the first chance for senior engineering students to present their design project goals to a wider audience. More than 165 teams were prepared to showcase their posters and to speak with faculty, industry reviewers and their peers about their projects.

Only about fifteen minutes into the event though, the weather decided it had a different plan. Rain began pouring on the plaza as a stronger storm made its way to Irvine.

Though the event had to be cancelled, it didn’t dampen the spirit of the hardy Anteater engineers.  Mechanical and aerospace engineers braved the rain a bit longer under the shelter of EZ-Ups, while biomedical engineering students partnered with those in materials science engineering to display their posters underneath the Engineering Gateway bridge. It was during this quick show of poster projects that biomedical engineering student and ESC Vice President of Relations Juliana Bordas passionately explained her team’s project, which aimed to create protective eye wear for neonates undergoing phototherapy. “It has been such a pleasure to conclude my fourth year working with such a wonderful team of girls while addressing such a large need in the neonate market,” said Bordas.

Be on the lookout for these same impressive projects to be displayed at the annual Winter Design Review event, which will be held indoors at the UCI Student Center on Friday, March 13, 2020.
