UCI Chapter for Hispanic Engineers Earns National Recognition
Nov. 26, 2019 - The UC Irvine chapter of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE at UCI) received the 2019 National Medium Size Chapter of the Year award at the SHPE National Convention in Phoenix, Arizona, Oct. 30-Nov 3. The UCI chapter was recognized for the for its performance overall during the year and for the strength of its functions, activities and events.
The UCI SHPE chapter works to recruit, retain, and graduate Latinx engineers by providing a comprehensive program that includes high school visitations, coordinated study sessions, and industry speakers and tours. SHPE at UCI prides itself as being one of the leading student chapters that is helping advance Hispanics in STEM.
“Every SHPE chapter across the United States is able to compete for this award, and out of all of these SHPE-UCI was able to win,” said Salvador Villalon, 2018-19 president of UCI SHPE, who accepted the award at the convention. “This is the first time in the history of our chapter that we have received this national recognition.”
