NASA fellowships awarded to three UCI hydrology graduate students

NASA logoThree UC Irvine graduate students have received prestigious NASA Earth and Space Science Fellowships for their research projects involving water and climate. NASA provides the awards, which include up to three years of financial support, to ensure training of a highly qualified workforce in disciplines that support its scientific goals.

“Each of these students is amazing in different ways and nicely reflect our diverse student demographics as well as the excellence of our water program,” said Brett Sanders, professor and chair of the civil and environmental engineering department.

The fellowship awardees are: Aimee Gibbons, a second-year doctoral student in Earth system science, who uses satellite information to estimate groundwater quality; Jamiat Nanteza, a second-year doctoral student in Earth system science, who uses satellite data and land surface models to assess changing water resources in East Africa; and Scott Sellars, a third-year doctoral student in civil and environmental engineering, who is working to improve seasonal climate condition predictions, which could lead to better water resource management.
