Washington discusses his desire to partner with industry

Gregory N. Washington, Ph.D., Dean of The Henry Samueli School of Engineering, was featured on the front page of the November 7-13, 2011 edition of the Orange County Business Journal.

Washington discussed his goals for the Samueli School which includes establishing joint programs that benefit students, faculty and industry while seeking private investment for existing and new partnerships. His efforts are part of three main initiatives: 1) courses designed for working professionals; 2) faculty research that supports the needs of industry and; 3) student and faculty groups consulting with industry.

Since arriving at UC Irvine this August, Washington has met with a number of top executives from the local area and the Samueli School’s Engineering Leadership Council to share his vision. Dr. Henry Samueli, co-founder, chairman and chief technical officer of Broadcom Corporation, is quoted in the article as saying, “Gregory’s clear vision of forging research partnerships with Orange County’s technology companies offers a creative win-win solution.”

Washington knows that the next generation of innovators must have technical knowledge as well as business acumen, and in order to help achieve this, the Samueli School must become true partners with industry. Washington sees potentially profitable collaborations as companies continue to reduce their research and development budgets.
