Nicholas Foundation Grants $100K to Establish Fellowships Supporting the Center for Embedded Computer Systems

Jan. 24, 2005 - The Center for Embedded Computer Systems (CECS) at the University of California, Irvine has been granted $100,000 from The Nicholas Foundation to establish two fellowships that will support UCI graduate students performing interdisciplinary research in the field of embedded systems. The "Henry T. Nicholas, III Research Fellows," will be awarded during the 2005-2006 academic term, and will provide a stipend in addition to payment of tuition and fees for one academic year.

CECS, an independent interdisciplinary research center focused on the emerging theory and technology of embedded systems, includes faculty from The Henry Samueli School of Engineering and the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences. The Center is directed by Professor Daniel D. Gajski, The Henry Samueli "Turing" Endowed Chair. CECS emphasizes research and development of automotive, medical and communications applications.

"This gift by Dr. and Mrs. Henry T. Nicholas III will strengthen our efforts to create a cluster of outstanding graduate students in Embedded Systems Design," said Nicolaos G. Alexopoulos, Dean of The Henry Samueli School of Engineering. "Embedded computer systems is a pervasive and expanding field across all sectors of technology, and therefore it impacts our economy to a significant degree."

Fellows will be selected by an independent committee comprised of CECS faculty and representatives from the Nicholas Endowment. Applications will be available soon on the CECS web page: www.cecs.uci.edu.
