MAE Professor Earns International Recognition
Assistant Professor Andrei M. Shkel received the George E. Brown, Jr. award from the University of California Institute for Mexico and the United States (UCMEXUS) and Mexico's National Council of Science and Technology (CONACYT). Shkel, an assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, was given this award for his collaborative project with Benemerita Universidad Autonoma de Puebla (BUAP) in Mexico. The project, a prototype vestibular implant, was considered "the research project that best exemplified the spirit of international collaboration and cooperation." The award includes supplemental funding for activities related to furthering academic ties between UC and Mexican colleagues. Established in 2000, it was named after U.S. Representative George E. Brown, Jr., whose goal was to strengthen U.S.-Mexico relations by supporting collaborative research and academic development. Shkel is working with Associate Professor Fan-Gang Zeng, a co-principal investigator affiliated with the Center for Biomedical Engineering, on this project. |
