American Meteorological Society Recognizes Sorooshian with Honorary Membership

Distinguished Professor Soroosh Sorooshian receives Honorary Membership status from the American Meteorological Society in recognition of his work in water resources engineering.

Jan. 25, 2022 - The American Meteorological Society has awarded Honorary Membership to UC Irvine’s Soroosh Sorooshian at the society’s annual meeting held virtually Jan. 23-27, 2022. Sorooshian, Distinguished Professor of civil and environmental engineering and Earth system science, is an internationally recognized expert in water resources engineering. He is one of three to receive the honor this year.

As director of UCI’s Center for Hydrometeorology & Remote Sensing, Sorooshian and his team specialize in tracking and measuring global precipitation. His research focuses on water resources systems, climate studies, application of remote sensing to Earth science problems, with an emphasis on the hydrologic cycle, and water issues in arid and semi-arid zones. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, International Academy of Astronautics and The World Academy of Sciences. Last year, he received the AMS Hydrologic Sciences Medal.

AMS recognizes outstanding individuals and organizations of the weather, water and climate community through its awards and honors program. Honorary Members are those with preeminence in the atmospheric or related oceanic or hydrologic sciences, either through their own contributions to the sciences or their application or furthering the advance of those sciences in some other way. According to the society, “Honorary Membership should be for accumulated distinction over a number of years rather than for a single accomplishment. It is an especially appropriate recognition for individuals whose contributions have very significantly reached in from other fields. The addition of a new name to the roster of AMS Honorary Members should be as much an honor for the society as it is for the individual.”

“Thank you AMS for this wonderful recognition,” said Sorooshian, in his video-recorded acceptance. “As an academic, I am blessed to have had so many wonderful Ph.D. students over the years as well as the funding agencies who’ve supported my work and most importantly, the professional societies such as AMS that allow us to disseminate information through our publications and through meetings, where we get together with colleagues to share our results and ideas. Again, thank you, I am very grateful.”
