Oct. 22, 2020 - The American Meteorological Society has awarded Soroosh Sorooshian the 2021 Hydrologic Sciences Medal. The AMS citation recognizes Sorooshian for “ingenious, groundbreaking work on surface hydrology and the remote sensing of precipitation that has profoundly impacted the field of hydrometeorology.”

Sorooshian, UC Irvine Distinguished Professor of civil & environmental engineering and Earth system science, is an internationally recognized expert in water resources engineering. As director of UCI’s Center for Hydrometeorology & Remote Sensing, he and his team specialize in tracking and measuring global precipitation. His research focuses on water resources systems, climate studies, application of remote sensing to Earth science problems, with an emphasis on the hydrologic cycle, and water issues in arid and semi-arid zones.

“I am truly honored and humbled by this recognition from the American Meteorological Society,” said Soroosh. “Needless to say that the award not only recognizes me personally, but also my doctoral students and postdocs over the past three decades.”

Sorooshian is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, the International Academy of Astronautics and the World Academy of Sciences. He currently serves as chair of the Rosenberg Forum on International Water Policy, the University of California Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources, and as a California Council of Science and Technology Distinguished Expert.  Previously, Sorooshian served 10 years as chair of the Scientific Steering Group of the World Climate Research Programme under the joint sponsorship of the World Meteorological Organization, the International Council for Science and the UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission.

The AMS Hydrologic Sciences Medal is granted annually to researchers who make outstanding contributions to scientific knowledge in hydrology, hydrometeorology and/or hydroclimatology, including interactions between the land surface and the atmosphere. The recognition, representing the highest award AMS can bestow on an individual in the hydrologic sciences, will be presented to Sorooshian at the 2021 American Meteorological Society annual meeting, to be held virtually in January 2021.
