Apelian Recognized by Alma Mater for Contributions to Profession

Distinguished Professor Diran Apelian receives an alumni award from Drexel University.

June 18, 2021 - Diran Apelian, Distinguished Professor of materials science and engineering, was recently honored with the 2021 Service to Profession alumni award from Drexel University. The award is given to a graduate who has earned recognition for his/her professional achievements or whose work has contributed to advancements within his/her chosen field.

A member of the National Academy of Engineering, National Academy of Inventors, European Academy of Sciences and Armenian Academy of Sciences, Apelian is recognized for pioneering work in various areas of solidification and metal processing, powder metallurgy and digital manufacturing. He has contributed to the establishment of research in resource recovery, reuse and recycling. He is the founding editor of the Journal of Sustainable Metallurgy, has been credited with more than 700 publications and 21 patents, and has founded six companies.

Apelian earned his bachelor’s degree in metallurgical engineering from Drexel in 1968. He was one of 20  to receive a Drexel alumni award at a virtual ceremony in May.
