On behalf of our faculty and staff, we extend a warm welcome to you!

In the UC Irvine Department of Biomedical Engineering, we are committed to fostering an inclusive environment where interdisciplinary researchers collaborate to advance human health. Our mission is to train students and researchers to use creative and critical thinking skills, enabling them to achieve groundbreaking innovation in research and the development of new biomedical devices.

We offer a comprehensive, multidisciplinary program that caters to students from various backgrounds and life experiences. With a robust team of 31 core faculty members and over 50 affiliate faculty from various fields, including other engineering disciplines, medicine, physical sciences and biological sciences, our students have abundant opportunities for collaboration and mentorship. We are proud to be a diverse and rapidly growing community with numerous professional researchers, 150 graduate students and over 550 undergraduates.

Our state-of-the-art programs are designed to ensure that diversity is woven throughout our curriculum, culture and leadership initiatives. Located within in a 10-minute drive from the Pacific coast in Orange County, California, our department is situated in a hub of medical technology innovation, with over 150 biomedical device companies forming a dense cluster for medical technology advancement and development. This concentration promotes collaboration and knowledge sharing and attracts talent. Additionally, our Corporate Advisory Board, comprising local biomedical industry leaders, provides invaluable guidance and advocacy, enhancing our mission to "Inspire Engineering Minds to Advance Human Health."
