CEE Seminar: Arsenic in Soil-plant-human Continuum: Assessment and Remediation

Abstract: Arsenic pollution in agricultural land has been increasing over time due to over-exploitation of groundwater. As a result, more arsenic is getting into the food chain from the soil. Therefore, there is an urgent need for risk assessment of arsenic-contaminated soils with the ultimate aim of judging the suitability of the soils for the safe cultivation of crops. This seminar will focus on the status of arsenic contamination in the U.S. and India followed by its fate in the soil-plant-human continuum. Sustainable approaches including nanotechnology to mitigate the arsenic menace in soil and water will also be addressed under the scenario of both countries. 

Bio: Golui completed his B.S. with a gold medal from Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya in 2010. He obtained his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees with distinction in 2012 and 2018, respectively, from the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi. In January 2016, he joined the Agricultural Research Service of the ICAR as a scientist. He has published about 40 research papers in journals of national and international repute. Golui is a recipient of the Fulbright Nehru Post-Doctoral Research Fellowships Award, the Indian Science Congress Association Young Scientist Award, the IARI Merit Medal, the Dr. S.P. Raychaudhuri Gold Medal of ISSS and the ISES Travel Award.
