Wendy Brown is honored by her alma mater as one of 40 under 40 Georgia Tech alums.

July 31, 2024Wendy Brown, an associate research fellow in biomedical engineering, has been recognized by her alma mater as one of 40 under 40 Georgia Tech alumni whose innovative spirits and work around the globe inspire others. Brown researches cartilage tissue engineering to repair injuries to the jaw joint and nose and is studying cartilage tissue engineering in microgravity on the International Space Station.

She works in the lab of Distinguished Professor Kyriacos Athanasiou whose interdisciplinary research group focuses on understanding the healing processes of cartilage and augmenting those processes via sound application of tissue engineering principles. Brown is also the director of regulatory and clinical affairs at Cartilage Inc., a start-up company she co-founded to commercialize the engineered cartilage technologies that she’s developing at UCI.

Brown earned a bachelor’s degree with high honors in biomedical engineering from Georgia Tech, a master’s degree in regulatory science from USC and a doctorate in biomedical engineering from UC Davis. She was the captain of Georgia Tech’s Goldrush Dance Team and went on to cheer professionally for seven years for the Atlanta Falcons, Sacramento Kings and Oakland Raiders. She now serves as the director of outreach for Science Cheerleaders, a nonprofit organization of over 300 current and profession cheerleaders with careers in STEM that aims to engage, inspire and empower young women to pursue STEM.

“It is a huge honor to be recognized by Georgia Tech,” said Brown. “I greatly cherish my time at Tech and on the Goldrush dance team and those experiences were absolutely fundamental to who I am and my successes.”
