Sanger Celebrated for Advancing Scientific and Medical Research in Pediatrics
Oct. 2, 2024 - The UCI Samueli School’s Dr. Terry Sanger was recognized with the Excellence Award from University Lab Partners and the Beall Family Foundation at their 2024 Ignite Gala in September. The annual event celebrates achievements across science, technology, engineering, medicine and business as well as unites individuals and their impact of collaboration within the Orange County community.
Sanger, professor of electrical engineering and computer science, is vice chair of research for pediatrics in the UCI School of Medicine and vice president and chief scientific officer at Children’s Hospital of Orange County. His research focuses on understanding the origins of pediatric movement disorders from both a biological and a computational perspective. He has made important recent discoveries on the genesis of childhood secondary dystonia. Sanger was honored for his significant contributions to the field and dedication to fostering pediatric research, medicine, engineering, innovation and education.
Syntr Health Technologies received the Community Service Award for their contributions to educational programming and supporting other start-ups at ULP. Syntr is a startup
company that was founded by UCI biomedical engineering alumni Ahmed Zobi ‘16, Hugo Salas ‘16 and Justin Stovner ‘16. They developed the world’s first device with FDA clearance that automates the processing of autologous fat to aid in healing and rejuvenation.
The evening included acknowledgement of Calabri Biosciences President John Gerace for his dedicated service as a UCI Foundation Trustee and his contributions to the Iacocca Family Foundation; Michelle Digman, professor and the new chair of the UCI Department of Biomedical Engineering; UCI's renewal of the Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI); and the notable achievements of students from the Sanger Lab.
"We are incredibly grateful for the support of our industry partners, collaborators, clinicians, educators and strategic advisors, said Sanger. “Together, we are shaping the future of our students and, by extension, the fields of science, technology, engineering and pediatric medicine."
