Chesler to Receive Sabin Award for Promoting Inclusion

June 9, 2023Naomi Chesler, a biomedical engineering professor at UCI, has been named the 2023 recipient of the Florence R. Sabin Award. The North American Vascular Biology Organization gives the award to a person who embodies the spirit of Dr. Florence Sabin, who was a trailblazer for women in medicine.

Chesler is UCI chancellor’s inclusive excellence professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering and also director of the Edwards Lifesciences Foundation Cardiovascular Innovation and Research Center. She has over 130 publications in her area of research, which focuses on cardiovascular mechanobiology and biomechanics.

As an advocate of equity, she has developed novel engineering education approaches, which provide opportunities for early learners and promote belonging for underrepresented groups. She also launched several peer-mentoring networks for women faculty. Chesler is active on UCI’s BME Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee and the UCI End Racism Initiative.

Chesler will receive the award at organization’s annual meeting, Vascular Biology 2023, in October at Newport, Rhode Island.
