AghaKouchak Designated a Chancellor’s Professor

Amir AghaKouchak is recognized as a UC Irvine Chancellor’s Professor of civil and environmental engineering.

Dec. 11, 2023Amir AghaKouchak has been named a UC Irvine Chancellor’s Professor in recognition of his extraordinary scholarly achievements and exceptional value to the university. The title of distinction is granted for a five-year renewable term.

AghaKouchak, a professor of civil and environmental engineering, specializes in interdisciplinary research spanning hydrology, climatology, statistics and remote sensing. He focuses on addressing critical global water resource issues, particularly climate extremes, compound hazards and their societal impacts. Notably recognized as a Highly Cited Researcher for four consecutive years, AghaKouchak has authored or coauthored 230 papers in prestigious publications like Nature, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Science Advances, Reviews of Geophysics and Nature Climate Change. His contributions have earned him multiple awards and accolades, including the AGU Macelwane Medal, ASCE Huber Prize, AGU Hydrologic Sciences Early Career Award, the Orange County Engineering Council Distinguished Educator Award, the Hellman Fellowship Award and the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG) Early Career Scientist Award.

With the addition of AghaKouchak, the Samueli School now has six Chancellor’s Professors: Plamen Atanassov, chemical and biomolecular engineering; Payam Heydari, Syed Jafar and Hamid Jafarkhani, electrical engineering and computer science; and Abe Lee, biomedical engineering.
