Oct. 26, 2023 -   Julián José Rimoli, professor and chair of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, has been named a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) in recognition of his outstanding achievements in engineering.

"I am deeply humbled and honored to be recognized by ASME,” Rimoli said. “This designation is not just a reflection of my work, but also a testament to the incredible students, colleagues, and mentors I have had the privilege to work with."

Rimoli has distinguished himself as both a researcher and educator.  His research focuses on developing novel numerical techniques for homogenization of nonlinear microstructures and creating new metamaterials for energy absorption applications.

He is an associate fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, winner of an NSF CAREER Award and a recipient of the Donald W. Douglas Prize Fellowship and Ernest E. Sechler Memorial Award in Aeronautics.

He is also an award-winning educator who has directly mentored 32 graduate and over 50 undergraduate students. His influence extends outside of the classroom as he created Truss Me!, an educational mobile app that teaches structural mechanics through a game.

His passion for education earned him the title of Provost Teaching and Learning Fellow at Georgia Tech, along with the Class of 1934 Outstanding Innovative Use of Education Technology Award and the Lockheed Dean’s Excellence in Teaching Award.

Established in 1880, the ASME is a not-for-profit organization that advances collaboration, knowledge sharing and skill development in the engineering community.  Rimoli is an active member of the ASME and has served two terms as the associate editor of their Journal of Vibrations and Acoustics.
