CEE Graduate Student Wins Department of Defense Scholarship Award

After earning his doctorate with the support of Department of Defense fellowship, Eric Shearer will work at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s Coastal & Hydraulics Laboratory.

April 15, 2021 - Eric J. Shearer, a UC Irvine doctoral student in civil and environmental engineering, has been awarded a Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation scholarship from the Department of Defense. The SMART scholarship provides students with full tuition for up to five years, summer internships, a stipend and full-time employment with the DOD after graduation.

At the Samueli School, Shearer is conducting research in hydrology and hydrometeorology under the advisement of faculty members Soroosh Sorooshian, Kuo-lin Hsu and Phu Nguyen in the Center for Hydrometeorology and Remote Sensing. After graduation, he will work at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center’s Coastal & Hydraulics Laboratory in Vicksburg, Mississippi.

“I am honored to be selected for this award, and I am looking forward to my future with the Coastal & Hydraulics Laboratory,” said Shearer. “CHL’s work is vital for ensuring California’s water security, among other emerging challenges brought on by our changing climate. It is immensely gratifying to know my work will make a difference.”

The SMART Scholarship-for-Service Program is a combined educational and workforce development opportunity for bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral students to gain technical skills in critical STEM fields and support the DOD’s national security mission.
