Samueli Professor is MRS Fellow

Pan was one of 16 materials scientists worldwide elected a 2018 fellow of the Materials Research Society. April 18 - UC Irvine Henry Samueli Endowed Chair in Engineering Xiaoqing Pan was one of 16 materials scientists worldwide elected a 2018 fellow of the Materials Research Society for distinguished research accomplishments and outstanding contributions to the advancement of materials research.

Pan, who serves as director of UCI’s Irvine Materials Research Institute, was singled out for “pioneering the development and innovative application of atomic resolution transmission electron microscopy and in situ techniques, leading to understanding ferroelectricity, domain dynamics and catalytic reactions.”

The highly selective fellow designation is reserved for 0.2 percent of the MRS regular membership. The new class of fellows was honored earlier this month at the 2018 MRS Spring Meeting & Exhibit in Phoenix, Arizona.

Pan, who is also a UCI professor of chemical engineering & materials science and physics & astronomy, has received many awards, including the National Science Foundation CAREER Award and the Chinese NSF’s Outstanding Young Investigator Award. He is a fellow of the American Ceramic Society, the American Physical Society and the Microscopy Society of America.

His research focuses on developing atomic resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and in situ techniques, leading to a better understanding of the atomic-scale structure-property relationships of advanced functional materials as well as the discovery of new properties and functionalities in these materials.
