Samueli School faculty and staff help judge contest

Broadcom Corporation is celebrating 20 years of innovation this year, and to commemorate the occasion, held an art contest for children of Broadcom employees worldwide. Children aged 8-12 were asked to draw or paint how technology affects their lives.

Judging for the contest took place on May 23 at the Broadcom Corporate Headquarters in Irvine and included faculty and staff from The Henry Samueli School of Engineering. Professor and Chair Michael M. Green, Ph.D., Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science; The Henry Samueli Endowed Chair and Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science H. Kumar Wickramasinghe, Ph.D.;and Assistant Dean, Development & External Relations, Pamela Gesme Miller, represented the Samueli School as judges. The judging panel also included representatives from the Laguna College of Art and Design.

The art was separated into three regional categories: North America, Asia and Europe, and each region was judged separately based on technical and artistic skills. The children were asked questions about how they see technology uniting the planet, how they learn from technology, how could they help their community with technology and what kind of technology will help connect people and their pets.

There were nearly 540 entries, with three entries chosen as grand prize winners and 10 more named runner-ups.  Participants all received 20th anniversary certificates and t-shirts. The grand prize winners each received an Apple iPad and will have their artwork framed and displayed in the hallways of Broadcom’s offices. The 10 runner-ups each received an Apple iPod Touch. The Broadcom Foundation will also make contributions to qualified charities of the grand prize winners’ choice.

The Broadcom Foundation was founded in 2009 and is funded solely by the Broadcom Corporation. Broadcom is a major technology innovator and global leader in semiconductors for wired and wireless communications whose products enable the delivery of voice, video, data and multimedia to and throughout the home, the office and the mobile environment.
